Finnish Venison Stew

Great Tasting Healthy Venison Stew

This great venison stew will help make you a 5-star venison chef.  I give credit for this great venison recipe to my wife Jeanne’s Mother, Evelyn Marsyla.  It is basically her old world “Finnish Stew” recipe that is usually made with beef.  It is so good that once served to your deer hunting buddies at your deer hunting camp, they will request it and look forward to this flavorful Finnish  Stew made with venison each and every year. I prepare this great venison stew each and every year at my deer hunting camp. It is a highlight that all my deer hunting buddies and family members look forward to and ask for each deer hunting season. I always serve this venison stew with my mother-in-law’s homemade Finnish Flat Bread recipe on the opening weekend of Minnesota’s firearm season.  Please order my Venison Recipe Book for more great venison and side dish recipes.

Thought’s Often Turn From Deer Hunting

The weather in Minnesota in early November can be quite cold. Our deer hunter’s, like you, can get chilled after a long day of deer hunting; especially when sitting in a deer hunting stand most of the day. I have had many a deer hunter come in from a day in a hunting stand, only to tell me that they thought of almost nothing the whole afternoon except feasting on my great stew of venison and homemade bread.

Use Up Your Venison Meat

I always save enough venison meat, steaks or roast, every year to make this great stew. I’m a bow hunter. If I shoot a deer with my bow I will immediately use up last years venison meat so I can make my favorite venison stews with fresh venison meat. What a treat! Please fallow the recipe directions to the letter. Let me know what you think. When you see your deer hunting partners or family just feast away, and not say much, you will know that you have made a great venison meal. This venison recipe for stew is very good, very flavorful (my mouth is watering just writing this), and you will be pleased.

Easy To Make Venison Stew

2 – 3 pounds of cubed venison meat

2 pounds of peeled and cubed potato’s

1 large onion – diced

1 medium peeled and cubed rutabaga (1/2 inch cubes – do not omit)

1/4 head of cabbage – shredded

1 pound of sliced carrots

3 long stalks of chopped celery

8 ounces of frozen corn

8 ounces of frozen peas

2 – 16 ounce cans of beef broth

2 tablespoons lemon juice

1 heaping tablespoon whole allspice

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon Five Spice (Chinese Style)

1 1/2 teaspoon salt

1 1/2 teaspoon course ground pepper

Put It All Together

Using a large Crock Pot or Dutch Oven, combine all ingredients. Fill with water to about an inch from the top, then cover.

Set the Crock Pot on low (not warm) and cook for 8 to 10 hours. Turn on high the last hour before serving. If you are using a Dutch Oven; fill with water to about an inch from the top, then cover. Cook on top of stove with low heat for about 4 hours. A good way to check cooking progress is to taste test the potato’s/rutabaga’s/carrots for tenderness. Once all are tender, turn heat down to a low simmer and simmer for 1 more hour to cook in the great flavors. Click on the crock pot to order yours. They are great!

Serve The Venison Feast

Serve your venison stew hot, in large serving bowels. Make your own breads (if you have a bread maker), or buy several loaves of your favorite bread whole, un-sliced, (one loaf for every 3 or 4 deer hunters), that your deer hunters can just tear off chunks, cover with real butter, and use for dipping in the stew. Some advise, have plenty as it will disappear. Also, have plenty of crackers and lots of butter on your dinning table. A jar of your favorite peanut butter wouldn’t hurt either. My favorite beverage with this stew is milk, and plenty of it. But anyone’s favorite beverage will do fine.

Take Credit Proudly

As your deer hunting buddies or family rant and rave about how good this venison stew recipe is; between all the grunting, slurping, lip-smacking and other feasting sounds: You just smile, take credit for it, and enjoy the moment. I think you will agree that this venison recipe is; Yum! Yum!
