Trophy deer hunting stories come in all shapes and sizes. Most are true, and some are always embellished or exaggerated. I will do my best to keep on the true side of any deer hunting stories I write about.
Here is an example of a hunting story that any serious deer hunter may find hard to believe. Did you ever here one like this; "I shot a 10 point buck while running full speed at 1120 yards. I (not me) shot him through the heart with my 22/250 with one shot? And, it was on the last day of the hunting season; with only 5 minutes of legal shooting light left. I dropped him right there." To be honest; that's embellishment. But that is a trophy deer hunting story that a friend told me, and I think he thinks it is true.
As ethical and truthful deer hunters we need to take a closer look at that shot. A 55 grain bullet from a 22/250 sighted in for zero at 250 yards, will have 7 and 1/4 inch drop at 350 yards. Also, the speed of this bullet has gone from a muzzle velocity of 3650 to 2400 feet per second at 300 yards, and corresponding ft. lbs. of energy of 1637 at muzzle to 704 at 300 yards. Now add another 700 plus yards to this shot, with accelerated bullet drop and speed loss, at a running trophy deer, not to mention any wind; and we all would cough the words "Bulls__t!".
As whitetail deer hunter's, we have all heard some entertaining deer hunting stories about trophy deer from other serious deer hunters. Lets enjoy all of them. Maybe someday we can add our own trophy deer hunting story.
