Harvesting Your Trophy Deer

For the whitetail deer hunter, a trophy deer harvest will be one of the most exciting and exhilarating events of their lifetime.

It's Early

The alarm goes off early in the morning, probably around 4 a.m., your tired; you want coffee quick. After your early morning activities you start to get dressed and wonder if this will be the day that you finally get that opportunity of a lifetime. You know that big buck is out there; somewhere. You have done your planning and preparation for your whitetail deer hunting trip. You say to yourself; "maybe, just maybe today will be the day". You hope so, after-all, isn't that what drives you to get up hours before daylight. Your thoughts race as you put on who knows how many layers of hunting clothing.

Anticipation

Then you hike out to your deer hunting area dressed in camouflage clothing, wearing your new sent free rubber hunting boots. Your confident of your hunting equipment. You've been archery hunting for years. This year you've made a point of buying the best archery products you can afford. Maybe it's one of those new hunting blinds you've wanted, or you have seen some great trophy deer pictures on your new hidden camera; a trail camera or deer cam. You have practiced endlessly on a variety of archery targets. You feel ready to harvest that trophy whitetail deer of a lifetime.

Change In Tactics

Or, it's later in the deer hunting season, your going to take a break from archery hunting. Now it's time reach out and touch a trophy deer with some heat. You pick up your rifle case and take out your favorite deer hunting rifle, you have sited in your rifle scope; it is shooting one inch groups at a hundred yards. Your confident of all your hunting supplies. You have planned this hunting trip for months. Before you leave to go to your hunting area, you ask yourself; "What am I forgetting?" "Nothing (I hope)."

A Guided Hunt

Or, maybe your on a guided deer hunt.

The feelings and self questions are the same. You wonder to yourself, "Is today the day?" Will I harvest the buck of a lifetime? Your confident in your Montana hunting guide for the day before you seen several nice bucks through spotting scopes or hunting binoculars. You have saved your money to go deer hunting in Montana for years. Now it's your turn to get that set of antlers for your Minnesota deer hunting cabin.

Harvesting a trophy deer; and again, every deer is a trophy, is what deer hunters dreams are made of. We can all be there. We need to learn as much as possible about the game we hunt. This picture is of my brother Mike and I. This nice doe was harvested by Mike near our farm on 11 November, 2006. Mike was using a custom 6.5 mm Mauser. The deer traveled about 45 yards after a well placed shot by Mike. Then it was onto the field dressing of this trophy whitetail doe.

Practice Quality Deer Management - Harvest more Does

By practicing the sound principle of Quality Deer Management you will improve your opportunity for harvesting a trophy whitetail deer. In many areas of the country, the whitetail deer herds have exploded in numbers of deer. By harvesting more does the odds of bucks living long enough to become trophy deer greatly increase for several reasons. 1. More quality food available; especially during harsh winters. 2. A rutting season more in tune with a bucks natural breeding abilities. Trophy bucks won't wear themselves out and deplete their fat stores by chasing and breeding to many does. The average buck will breed 3 to 5 females in a normal breeding season. More than that and they may put themselves in a negative energy balance for the winter. 3. Less likely to in-breed; a sister or even a mother.
