The Senses Deer Use For Survival

The best survival mechanism  of the whitetail are its' own deer senses.  The odds for success are against you, the trophy deer hunter, every time you take to the great outdoors in pursuit of this magnificent animal.  You are in their backyard.  They know every branch and blade of grass their.  As a deer hunter, you will need to sharpen all of your hunting skills and know that you are the predator that deer want to avoid at all costs.  Deer will notice any and all changes to their environment.  All alterations, trimming of branches, hanging of stands, setting up blinds and more should be done well before the deer hunting season begins.

A Whitetail's Eyes

One of the key deer senses are the eyes.

A Whitetail's Vision

The eye's of whitetails are set in their skull in such a way that they can detect movement in almost all directions except directly behind them.  Their field of vision is around 300 degrees.  In a 360 degree circle, that is pretty good.  They especially seem to notice eye to eye contact within 30 yards or so.  Experienced archery hunters know not to look a trophy deer in the eye at ranges closer than that.  I myself will watch their hind legs or look to the ground as they approach.  Only looking to their eyes as they move behind or through cover.  This the same technique I use to draw my arrow for a shot at a deer.  A whitetail deer, especially a trophy buck, is always on the lookout for anything unusual or out of the ordinary in and around their home area.  Even when hunting for trophy deer from a deer hunting blind, you still need to think camouflage, and make sure it blends into its surroundings.

A Nose That Tells All

A whitetails nose is said to be over a thousand times as sensitive as a humans nose.  A deer can smell a careless hunter hundreds of yards away.  Some researchers say up to a half mile.  Not good for the archery hunter who's archery hunting technique is questionable when it comes to scent disciplineRubber hunting boots that are kept clean and free of all odors, are a must for any serious trophy deer hunter.  Hunters should bath and wash with sent free soaps.  Camouflage hunting clothes, and all hunting clothing should be cleaned with scent free detergents.  A hunter must hunt the wind and always be aware of it's direction and any changes.  A hunter should even have several hunting sites available to them for the occasional changes in prevailing winds.  On my archery hunting land I have strategically placed hunting sites so I can hunt the wind from any direction.

Whitetail's Ears

One of the other deer senses that deer rely on for survival is their hearing.  If you watch a trophy deer and how their ears move and react, you'll notice they never seem to be tuned to the same direction at the same time.  They are like radar antennas; constantly searching and moving, twisting in one direction or another and never in unison unless alerted to something.  Notice how much larger they are then ours?  Notice the shape, and how efficient they are to gather sound waves.

The Right Hunting Equipment

Your deer hunting equipment needs to be stealthy and silent in nature.  When you go shopping for your hunting supplies, shop with these things in mind.  Don't purchase your hunting gear for a fashion statement.  Remember, you don't want to be seen, smelled, or heard on your hunting land during your next hunting trip.
